Remember when you first launched your business? If you were like most people you did what other people in the industry did. Of course you developed your own processes and systems etc. but by and large you followed the mould of those that have gone before you.
This process of copying what other businesses have done is called mimiticisomorphic behavior. What academics have found is that an industry company will mimic the behavior of other companies and the actually 'morph' into them or become like them.
Following other companies is clearly the most common way to do business however it may not be the most effective. In fact I propose that we move towards antimimeticisopmorphic behavior which actually means doing the opposite of what other companies have done.
Most people in business follow like sheep. They study closely what their competitors doing and then do the same. This creates an 'average' middle ground of results because by definition if you are following the crowd you will get average results.
What if you were to start doing things differently to people in your industry? The way to do this is by asking yourself different questions? What is a better way of doing this process? What is a different way of doing this process?
An example of this antimimeticisomorphic way of thinking is the restaurant owner who would allow people to pay what they thought the meal was worth. This accountability producing result has helped the business boom. Do some people probably rip them off? Sure, they probably do. But, the majority of people pay rich rewards for the great service and good food.
My advice to you is to test the idea of thinking in this new way on a small part of your business and then once you have a sense of the extreme value of it, then scale it up.
Here are some great questions for yoo to ask yourself to start thinking antimimeticisomorphically: * What fun and audacious (and of course not illegal) promotion can I use to make my marketing more effective? * If an 8 year old was in my business thinking up wild ideas to create a fun and exciting business what would they suggest? * What cool idea have I seen a company use in an unrelated field that I could use in my business?
