Setting Up The Ideal Musical Area For Your Budding Musician

By Connor Sullivan

Everyone can agree on the benefits of music lessons for kids. In particular, piano lessons are the best choice. But, for the young student, music lessons can be a long, difficult undertaking. Parents thus need to do whatever possible to encourage the student and make the experience rewarding. There are a variety of things you can do, but one good strategy to start with is to make the student feel important. Create a mental picture of their potential musicianship. You can begin to form this picture of the future by creating an inviting musical environment. A music room is a luxury, so a nice corner of the living room or family room can be set up as a music area. Additional furniture and accessories can make this more musical and professional, plus it will provide greater comfort for the student. Three of these accessories are pedal extenders, an adjustable piano bench, and a place for sheet music storage.

The optimal time for a student to begin playing the piano is around five to seven years old. However, a child of this age is dwarfed by the large piano. While they make small-sized violins for small children, a piano is a piano, and it is built for adults. When you give your child pedal extenders and an adjustable bench, the child can sit comfortable and put all concentration on the music and not on physical discomfort. Pedal extenders are an ingenious addition to the piano. At first sight, they look like a footstool and can serve the purpose of giving a child a place for the feet so they do not dangle freely, but they also have piano pedals. Piano pedals sit on the top, and underneath are posts that sit on the pedals of the piano, so that when the child pushed the pedal on the footstool, the piano pedals are pushed by the extenders. With an adjustable piano bench, the child can be at the correct height to reach the keys comfortably.

As a beautiful piece of furniture a sheet music cabinet can sit in your home with other pieces of furniture. But its true purpose is to keep the many pieces of music organized and hidden. Most piano benches can hold music, but not very much. After that, the music usually begins to pile up on the top of the piano. It does not take much music to become precarious pile. Plus, in the cabinet they are organized in a way that allows them to be located quickly.

Another tool to help turn the student into a real musician is a metronome. Do not purchase a metronome as a birthday present. The child would rather get fun toys at this time of the year and will be as disappointed in a metronome as they would be to receive underwear from Santa. But if you make a special gift to your special musician, it will be more appreciated.

So try in every way to make the child feel special as he or she move into the role of music student. The benefits of a music education are so great that it is worth your effort. - 2364
