Six Tips for Starting a Home Based Business

By Ronni Barr

Starting a home-based business can be a challenging, and rewarding experience. The basic requirements include self discipline and motivation. While it is not for everyone, if you feel you are ready to take the plunge into starting a home-based business the following tips will be helpful.

1. Determine your office hours. Although you are free to come and go as you please, it is vital that you stick to a regular routine that includes opening and closing times, breaks, and lunch time.

2. Organize your daily tasks. For example, make phone calls and do more important tasks in the morning leaving your afternoons for "family chores" such as picking up the kids from school and going to the bank or post office.

3. Arrange your work space. "Work at home" individuals tend to be disorderly, spreading their work all over the house. It is best to designate a room as your office. If this is not possible allocate a corner of a room that is for business only.

4. Dress for success. Yes, you may be able to work in your pajamas in your own home but don't do it. Dress like you're expecting a client. Believe it or not, it will affect your performance!

5. Inform your family and friends that you are working even though you are at home. Let them know you are not available for personal visitation during the business hours you established.

6. Don't become a workaholic. Self-employed individuals usually work long, arduous hours. When your established workday is over, turn off your computer and unplug your business phone so that you will not be tempted to answer email or the phone during your off-time.

Working from home requires self discipline, strong motivation, and the ability to work alone. Not everyone has these qualities; however, those who do may discover that starting their own home-based business is the ideal employment solution. - 2364
