Blogging Basics

By Marenda Taylor

When you are getting your start as a blogger, there are a few important terms which all bloggers must learn. You need to know and understand these important pieces of terminology: blog, web host, domain and platform. After you learn these important terms, you'll be talking like a blogging pro. When you know how a blog works (and of course, what a blog is), you'll be able to easily pass your exam in blogging 101.

Blog is a short form of the word weblog. A blog consists of a series of posts which are organized by date. A blog is something like an online diary, but of course your blog can be about anything you like. While the majority of blogs are only text, you can see a lot of video and photo blogs out there as well. You'll need to know a bit about the technical aspects of setting up your blog to get started.

First we should talk about platforms. A platform is the software which provides you the ability to write and edit your blog posts, as well as to place theme on your blog. There are also tools included to help you customize the look of your blog, letting you adjust colors, fonts and other design elements.

The next term is web host. A web host refers to the company (or a server owned by that company) which is the "residence" of your blog. Think of it as a sort of file cabinet where the blog posts you write are stored.

Last is domain, which is the address of your blog on the web. This address will usually end in .com.

Once you learn all of these important terms which every blogger has to know, you deserve a reward: you have successfully completed blogging 101! - 2364
